In the Holy of Holies in the Beit Hamikdash there was a stone called Even Shatiyah (Foundation Stone) on which rested the Holy Ark. Even after the Ark was removed, the stone was the surface upon which incense was offered on Yom Kippur.

Rabbi Yossi explains the name given to this stone:

"It was from this stone that the universe was founded."
